Among cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin receives most media headlines, but did you know that less-known Bitcoin alternatives could be faster and more functional? Two of the leading contenders are Litecoin and Ethereum. When comparing Litecoin vs Ethereum, which cryptocurrency is best?

Along with Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum have grown like mushrooms in recent years towards several billion dollar market capitalization, but do not be fooled into believing that cryptocurrency is a safe bet.

Before wondering either Litecoin or Ethereum, you should consider how well you own very volatile digital assets. In almost a glance, the prices of crypto curves have been known to fluctuate by two-digit percentages.

Which cryptocurrency is best? Is it the relatively new cryptocurrency Ethereum, which was launched in 2015 and quickly rose to another in the row behind Bitcoin? Or Litecoin, the more established digital currency that has existed since 2011?

Litecoin Vs Ethereum

Perhaps the biggest difference between Litecoin and Ethereum is that the former is a crypto exchange, while the latter, Ethereum, is an open-source, blockchain-based distributed computer platform that can support smart contract functionality.

It's a complicated way to say that Ethereum not only makes a cryptocurrency called ether possible but can also support the launch of new crypto curves and allow funds to be funded for new projects.

The easiest way to think about Ethereum is to compare it with something you're probably using every day your cell phone. If you have an Android or iOS phone, you have apps that can perform a variety of features when you order an uber to map a route across the city.

Apps are written in a variety of languages for many purposes and can be downloaded by anyone. Similarly, Ethereum was designed as the basic blockchain layer that understands general purpose programming languages that provide flexibility to the blockchain world.

Litecoin is strictly a cryptocurrency, which means that people use it mainly to conduct transactions. The currency can be mined, as can bitcoin; however, its sole purpose is to serve as a digital currency.

They're hard to compare because they are so different but in terms of short term ROI I think ltc might be a better investment for the next month because ether is fishing up it's long term rally and LTC has another leg up coming

It is my opinion that Digibyte is one of the best crypto currencies and will make a lot of people wealthy as the adoption rate of Bitcoin grows. I'm not going to bore you with a technical analysis of the project, but rather provide my theory as to what the catalyst will be that makes the price of this coin rise in value.

The Digibyte team are geniuses from a technical standpoint. I'm sure if you are reading this you are already aware of the superior asset Digibyte is to other cryptos. The problem lies in marketing. With the adoption rate of the most popular crypto Bitcoin under 2% it is no surprise that very few people know of Digibyte and their nerdy crew. But no worries because Bitcoin is going to save the day.

As the masses become more familiar with Bitcoin and merchants attempt to implement it as a payment choice the faults of Bitcoin will become known on the big stage. I can see the morning news now talking of 10 minute wait times at Starbucks for a Bitcoin confirmation to clear. There will be a desperate search for a faster more secure payment method in the crypto space. And there with their big dicks swinging in the air will be Digibyte to the rescue. It is simply the natural progression of any new technology. Bitcoin is like Motorola and Nokia, but Digibyte will be Apple and Samsung.

they are both different coins that do different things... Eth is a blockchain platform for people to build things on like the Dumb crypto Kitties.. and Litecoin is more of a coin that can be used for fast exchanges of funds. As for Digibyte.. maybe I have to get myself some of that to hodl, and stop just trading it all the time..

I don't see bright future for both of them if they stay same like today. LTC needs to be faster to become valid payment coin and ETH need to improve scalability. With Casper it will become POS but scaling problem stays. EOS is starting at June and it will be much better platform than ETH so they need to find solution soon...

I agree that EOS can overtake for sure.

I have more Ethereum than Lightcoin but I think it's sensible to have some of both. Ethereum could be a threat to Bitcoin and Litecoin can use all that's good with Bitcoin and be more experimental.

2018 is going to be interesting. The fall in the overall market cap so far this year is alarming but it still feels like cryptocurrency is in its early days. I'm not investing money I can't afford to lose and I can keep my coins in these downturns. Hopefully things will look better by the end of the year.

Litecoin and Ethereum both work in completely different ways even tho Ethereum works as a currency too but Litecoin will be the main adoptor of payments in the real world with the upcoming Litepay Debit Card. Ethereum is amazing to bringing new coins with possibly solid projects out there. A lot of great coins exists thanks to Ethereum today. :) Great post and upvoted!

In my humble opinion Ethereum clearly is more advanced than litecoin but I believe in holding both in my portfolio.
If I had to divorce one it would be litecoin.

This is a tough one and it might come down to what you want to do with your Crypto. I feel like both Ethereum and Litecoin have lots of room for growth and are still just starting to cut teeth on all that they are capable. To me it feels like if you are wanting a coin to use across many platforms and that many projects are embedded in then you will want to be loading up on Ethereum. If you are looking for a coin that you can use consistently as an alternative to cash then it is starting to look very much like Litecoin is your horse. For me personally I kind of have a soft spot for Litecoin because it was the first Crypto I invested in and I saw great gains. I also think that it has a ton more value for growth. Still can't wait to get a Litecoin pay card.

Great thought-provoking post - to your point, they're two different cryptos trying to serve different purposes. I ultimately am more bullish on Ethereum because it has higher application usage for consumer businesses. Microsoft, for example, is looking into a decentralized ID based off Ethereum. Wide-scale commercial applications can take crypto to the next level.

I don't love how slow or buggy ETH remains as a platform though so for anyone investing in Ethereum, I'd suggest also hedging with EOS and other alt coins.

I mean is this even a question? It's clearly Ether. 80% of the top 100 coins are built on the ethererum block chain. If ether fails, crypto fails.
