RE: Is cryptocurrency a hype?

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago

I don't think cryptocurrency is a hype. In the long run, almost all cash and bank deposits will end up at some blockchain of a sort - and it doesn't end there, as blockchains can be used for much more than just money.

However, there will be some few winners and many many losers. What cryptocurrencies will prevail? Is the prevailing cryptocurrency even invented yet? What if some governments-and-banks-sponsored permissioned coin will take over and become the international standard for monetary transfers?

Also, I believe we're in a bubble now. People are currently flocking in, they want to buy bitcoins and other cryptos not because they have understood any of the fundamentals behind it, but because they see an asset that is still growing. and growing. and growing. At some point there has to be a correction.

Also, I'm quite concerned about the flagship - Bitcoin - it grew up as a promise of being a viable payments platform, but due to the capacity ceiling it is not. I believe the very most of the bitcoins bought and sold nowdays are held at exchanges, it's merely balances on accounts, and people are buying it not for using it as a means of payment but due to a speculation of future price growth. Digital tulips, anyone?
