Colleges Adding Cryptocurrencies to Curriculum

It's no secret millennials are the largest demographic interested in cryptocurrencies. While cryptocurrencies bared the negative reputation of being a scam or a way to conduct illegal transactions in the past, institutions and the general public have become more educated and see the potential crypto and blockchain technology can offer.

It was only a matter of time before these new digital assets would become a hot topic among college students interested in finance and technology. Colleges are beginning to add cryptocurrency discussions to their curriculum as they have become legitimate players in the finance world, especially after the addition of Bitcoin Futures trading on the CBOE, WallStreet, and the CME.

“It’s not so much about being ahead; it’s making sure that you’re not going to be behind,” said Sarit Markovich, a professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management."
Markovich holds a doctorate in economics and a degree in computer sciences and began discussing bitcoin and blockchain technology in her finance classes 5 years ago. She has stated that in the beginning there really weren't too many students interested in cryptocurrencies, but that has definitely changed the last year.

“It was hard for me to fill up the course. Students were interested in typical traditional banking. They were like, ‘We don’t want to hear about that. ... Tell us about mergers and acquisitions", Marcovich stated.

With approval from Northwestern's Kellog Business School, Marcovich is currently designing a full course about blockchain and cryptocurrencies for MBA students. The course will likely be available this coming fall school year.

The Illinois Institute of Technology is also working on cryptocurrency and blockchain related courses to be offered as early as this summer.

This is great news for crypto in general as the main reason there are detractors are due to lack of education and knowledge. It's understandable as the majority of the hype from cryptocurrencies are the crazy price surges. People aren't being educated beyond price points and profit potential. Teaching crypto correctly to the new generation will only mean growth, innovation, and adoption in the long run.
