???? Litecoin and Ethereum surge

So, i'm writing this post after the massive increase in Litecoin & Ethereum over the last two days. I have seen both of these cryptos increase in USD value exponentially, with some degree of settling over the course of today (from Litecoin at least). My real question is what has caused this massive increase? Is this purely hype and excitement for the crypto movement? Or is there genuine value in these currencies?
Speaking as someone who has invested a small amount in both before this surge i'm interested to hear the opinions of others, especially those more in the know than I.

I am aware of the volatility of these products. However, my personal advocation and belief is that cryptocurrencies MAY help solve antiquated banking and government finance systems that has for hundreds (potentially thousands) of years benefited only to line the pockets of the few, with a complete unwillingness to distribute wealth.

What do others think? I'd love to know! :)
