Well, what would be a better place to ask this question, if not here?

No doubts of the impact of the the decentralized currencies in our current times, but I started to wonder, are you aware of usage of such payment systems in any of the scientific works before the introduction of the bitcoin?

I had looking for a long time to answer this question, and I find it difficult to believe that nobody imagine such a world where the right over the currency resides with the users of it, not with centralized governments.

One interesting finding: in Dune (first published in 1965), they used the centralized "solari", but already, the purchasing power was set at quatricentennial negotiations between the Guild (an organization with monopoly on space travel), the Landsraad (the body that represented all the Great Houses), and the Emperor. Yet, the "atomics" (unclear weapons of mass destruction) were placed in the ownership of each of the Great Houses, but not the currency.
