What I'm Holding & Why - INTRO - The Art of HODL
Over the next few weeks i'm going to provide an insight into my crypto portfolio, and give an overview of some of the best coins out there with longer term value.
In Time You To Can Be a Smug Crypto Investor SOURCE
To start with, let me explain that I do not trade actively, but I am a strong believer in the underlying tech of cryptocurrencies. Price increases are nice, but as recent corrections have demonstrated, this market is still volatile and prone to speculative bubbles.
There is so much to choose to invest in now, it can be a bit overwhelming. In my opinion, the only way to pick a coin is through rigorous research of fundamentals. This includes looking at the problem it addresses and how, the industry it targets, the development team, the community supporting it, etc.
If people do their research, try to understand how blockchains work, and then think about how this tech will impact an industry in real-life, then the value proposition should become clear.
The crypto investment requires patience. No doubt the tech is a game-changer, and I fully subscribe to the idea that we are on the cusp of a financial and technological revolution, that in the the future will reach into everyone's lives. Parallels with the early days of the internet seem valid.
However, such shifts are are not going to happen overnight. The crypto market is still in its infancy, with a lot of unseen twists and turns still to come. The crazy run-up in the last few months should be considered an anomaly born of speculation.
In my opinion, anyone looking to make a 'quick buck' out of crypto is doing it wrong - better to put your fiat into a few strong projects and write that money off for 3-5 years. If you cash out too early, you might regret it. Its also notoriously difficult to time the market. Once the tech matures and adoption picks up, then true value will be revealed, and the early adopters will be rewarded for their strong hands!
The coins in my portfolio are quite diverse, with various different use cases. I've spread my investments across quite a few coins, although of course for a lot of these I only hold a few.
I still believe that the OG of crypto - Bitcoin - has a part to play, although it will not hold true to Satoshi's original vision, becoming instead more of a store of value. As we enter 2018, it is becoming clear that the underlying tech of Bitcoin is rather limited and there is no guarantee that it will stand the test of time, particularly with how difficult it is to achieve consensus on necessary upgrades to its protocol. No doubt platforms that provide smart-contracts, privacy and fast transactions are going to keep eating away at Bitcoin's market dominance.
So what do I recommend looking at with a view to long-term hold? Here are my favourites with more in depth analysis to come...
What coins are you planning on holding long term
Is your portfolio highly diversified or do you prefer to hedge your bets on one or two coins?
Im interested to hear what others are doing!?
Great advice. I agree I think investments need to be longer term. Yes you might make a few dollars fast in crypto but what r you giving up by getting out fast.
I agree about what you say for choosing coins to hold long term. I also try to diversify as much as I can with good coins.
Thank you for this informative post, Really helpful and well written
