Faster than the blockchain, there is no high electricityy mining for proof of work. Instead they use something called gossip and a voting system. Watch the video it gives a througher explanation and has interviews with prof Leemon Baird.
Like all technology, when a more efficient and improved technology comes along, the old technology gets replaced.

I found this post to be extremely informative. I had not heard of hashgraph, interesting technology, time will tell. It's astonishing when you think about the rate at which technology is advancing.
