Crypto Collectible Games

The popularity of Cryptokitties has opened the doors to a new era in which Blockchain collectible games are nothing special anymore.

Cryptokitties was the first of its kind, and the game that was built on the Ethereum blockchain got incredibly popular.

In case you're not familiar with Cryptokitties, let me give you a short explanation:
In the Cryptokitties game, users purchase, trade, and breed digital kittens that come with several different attributes, one being more rare - and as a result more expensive - than another.

Million Dollar Industry

People all around the world spent millions of American Dollars on Cryptokittiese and the game became so popular that at one point it slowed down the entire Ethereum Blockchain and some ICO's had to postpone their launch.

A New Trend

It's not really surprising that this was the start of a new trend. New Blockchain-based crypto collectible games are popping up everywhere these days.

Games like Fishbank, Ethermon, Cryptofighters, Etherarmy, Cryptopets, Cryptodrome, Ethbabes and a lot more have launched or are scheduled to launch soon. You can even buy yourself some Cryptotitties and enter a motorboat race to win a real motorboat.

Crypto Celebrities

But none of them will be a real competitor for the crypto collectible game that is overtaking the world by storm.

'Crypto Celebrities' launched earlier this week and within 24 hours users spent over a million Dollars in Ethereum buying celebrity tokens.

The game itself is pretty basic: every celebrity has his or her own contract that can be bought with Ethereum. When a user owns such a contract, he basically 'owns' the celebrity. If another user wants this celebrity to add to his collection, he has to buy it off, leaving the original owner with a (small) profit.

There's one feature that makes this collectible game truely unique: each celebrity can profit from their own contracts being bought and sold. If they're prepared to verify their association with the game, they get 3% of every transaction of their contract.

The verification process won't be available before March 2018 though, which means those celebs are missing out on truckloads of money.

Buy & Trade Your Favorite Celebrities

The first adopters were the lucky ones: the starting price of each celebrity contract was about $0.10. When a contract was sold, the price went up to $0.20. The more times the celebrities are being traded, the more expensive they become.

When you take a peek at the marketplace, you can for example 'buy' Leonardo Di Caprio for 7.3 ETH, which is about $7400.

At the moment of writing, the celebrity that will cost you the most money is Vitalik Buterin (who's is that?), 67.60047 ETH to be exact. That's almost $70.000.
Donald Trump is the runner up. If you want to own him, it'll cost you 55.25603 ETH ($65,500).

If you don't want to spend that much money, there's always Elvis Costello, who you can buy for only 0.97944 ETH, which is still about $1000.

The newest celebrities that are available for sale include Barack Obama, Pamela Anderson, Lady gaga and Vladimir Putin.

Celebrity Craze

Celebrities are desirable, both on and off the Blockchain, so it's not a surprise that this game became a huge hit overnight. Allthough a lot of people are obsessed by celebrities, I don't see this game reach the same level of popularity as Cryptokitties, since the prices are already sky high. Soon, it will become a crypto collectible game for millionairs only.

If I would want to buy my own celebrity, it would be horror-legend Stephen King. I searched the market place (just for fun - I'm not going to spend my money on something like this), but he wasn't even for sale. Quite a bummer, I must say...

How About You?

How do yóu feel about those cryptocollectible games in which people are spending thousands of Dollars to own a virtual asset, whether it are kitties, celebrities, dogs or horses?

If you're one of them, maybe you can explain why this is worth the money?

If you're not one of them, can you think of any reason why people are willing to spend that much money on a crypto collectible game?

I really like to hear your thoughts!

With CryptoKitties there was a mystic unknown involved, some lucky cross breed that can make you some money if you get really lucky. I can see the thrill in that.

Where is thrill in cryptocelebrities? You can't even breed them lol
And they cost a lot of money. That should be turn off imo.
Guaranteed small profit? (will always sell for a little bit more) Yeah, until craze is over, then you are left holding the bag. Ehm I mean, holding the card you paid a lot for it...

I would be shocked if this one become a huge success.
But then again, one should never underestimate stupidity that is surrounding us ;-)

I think the thrill is to be able to ‘own’ a celebrity. People go crazy about everyting that is onvolvong celebs, no matter what it is.
And indeed, what if the hype is over and you get stuck with a card you paid a lot for, but has no value at all? I think the best way to recover is to come up with another ‘game’ in which you can get rid of that card and get your money back somehow...

Hope it doesn't get out of control. Some of the B Level celebrities might get more attention than they can handle.

Lol. It sure is good for your ego, being sold for that much money.
I wonder how Trump is feeling as a runner up :-)
(That reminds me: I still have to go look up who this Vitalik Buterin-guy is)

Okay, found it. Makes sense now - lmao

I used to talk about interesting it would be if you could buy "stock" in a band .... then when you see the writing on the wall and their albums start to suck you could sell off your stock and the band would get the proceeds - with cryptocurrecny - this might actually be a real thing someday.
