Japanese Amazon Competitor Rakuten Launching Rakuten Coin 楽天が楽天コインを設ける

News out of Barcelona today, Rakuten's CEO Hiroshi “Mickey” Mikitani announced they will be launching Rakuten-coin. This could be a first to market push to get ahead of Amazon and other large, global retailers, but Rakuten is no new comer to crypto.

Rakuten first became involved in crypto back in 2014 with their investment in Belfast, Ireland based Bitnet Technologies. Fast forward two years, Bitnet was struggling to survive. So in August of 2016 Rakuten acquired  Bitnet's IP and assets, created Rakuten Blockchain Labs and brought over Stephen McNamara Bitnet CTO and Fergal Down who was the VP of engineering.

The announcement date of the coin has not been made public yet, nor has information of how it will be distributed. I imagine it will be a POS coin with conversion from existing point holders, but we will see. I have a bit more interest in this than most because my wife and I use Rakuten a lot and occasionally sell items on it. I better let my wife know to stop spending her points so we can redeem them for crypto!

In closing, this is a big deal. I keep saying crypto is not going away and we are at the beginning of it so HODL. Yes, there will be down days and hard times, but the future is bright. These mega corporations know this as is evidenced by their involvement behind the scenes for years. All the indicators are there, don't give into FUD and most importantly DYOR Do Your Own Research!
