Productivist, Manufacturing 4.0: You no longer need Chinese workshops

Every little thing in our lives seems to be produced by Chinese manufacturers these days. They produce anything and everything from toys to cement to steel pipes. According to Wikipedia, Industry and construction account for about 48% of China's GDP and China ranks second worldwide in industrial output. On one hand, it is great that we can get our stuff for next to nothing, but on the other hand, all these cheap manufacturing being in China are viewed as low quality and unpredictable. These manufacturers have been improving their quality and it is a lot better now, but economic or political factors still keep the unpredictability factor high. In addition, and maybe the most important factor as to why you do not want your business in these types of factories is the minimums. If you are going to have a toy produced in a factory, you have to have a high number. If you are a small shop, or if you are simply a normal person who wants something custom made, you are out of luck. It is either way too expensive, or they will not make it, or the shipping and handling costs are way too high. This is especially true for China, as their minimums are higher than average. For example, I tried to purchase a solar street light for my yard. Any solar “garden light” you get locally is too dim, or it has to see you turn on or something. But if you buy what is called a solar street light, your yard is lit up just fine, and it turns on automatically at night, and it does not need to see any people turn on. Anyways, I wrote to Chinese manufacturers, because this thing was not available locally. They said I either have to purchase hundreds of them or pay for the shipping via, you guessed it, a container ship. The cost would be twice of the good. Anyways, I had to give up my purchase and wait for the lamp to come out to the retail market. If I had a platform like https://www.freelabster.com back then, I could simply order my solar street light from a 3D printer online, locally, and I would get it instead of waiting months to get it from China. Now I can almost hear you, telling me I ain’t gonna print no solar street light. You are correct, but correct only for now, as the technology is progressing like crazy, and sooner than later, we will be able to print things with silicon, and even moving parts and chemicals.
