Monthly sentiment analysis on 272 cryptocurrencies; Top 15 coins going into May

Plot 1730.png

April was a month that gave us a taste of what it was like to be in a bull run again. And it was good.

Throughout the month, I tracked 40 prominent crypto traders and influencers, collecting data each time they mentioned a specific coin/token by name and whether they mentioned it in a positive, neutral or negative light.

The result? I collected data on more than 270 separate crypto projects and nearly 3,000 total mentions. If you're new here, I take that data and do a blind analysis on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to see what coins are being discussed the most and what folks think about them.

A lot of people follow and trust this group, but following them individually on social media can make a mess out of any amateur trader's brain (see: mine). This is my effort to pull a signal from the noise.

The monthly analysis is my longest term offering. When you take a month of data, you're really taking the temperature of the cohort's overall feeling about a coin's health and future. The weekly analysis is more useful for short-term outlooks.

Bitcoin

Plot 1728.png

Let's take a look at $BTC first, considering the whims of the alt market are largely dependent on it. Bitcoin had a good month, but it wasn't enough to convince folks that we've finally turned a corner.

It's relative stability helped Alts soar in April, but overall, sentiment remains net bearish on the market leader. This is something I urge you to consider when looking at this data. Bitcoin was actually the worst single coin/token I tracked by sentiment, coming in with a net -17 score.

The Top 15 Alts

After such a great month, there aren't many Alts that ended up with a negative score. But as you'll see in the charts below, some coins got a lot more attention than most, resulting in far more positive sentiment scores than others.

If you're looking for info on a specific coin not on the list below, the full data sheet is at the bottom of this post

Here are the top 15 coins for April by net sentiment (power), and how they accumulated that score through the month:

Who am I?

I'm an investigative data journalist during the day, and I've been looking for a way to cut through the noise and get a true sense of what some of the biggest crypto influencers are pushing toward and pulling away from.

Using a pseudonym here because I can't post about this shit on my verified accounts. I've become mildly obsessed with crypto and its constant stream of data and needed an outlet. So here I am.

What is this?

Each week, I scrape the Twitter accounts of some of the crypto world's favorite influencers, traders and TA folk. I run a basic sentiment analysis to see which coins they are mentioning positively, in a neutral way and which they are mentioning in a negative light.

I calculate "power" simply by subtracting negative mentions from positive ones to give an aggregate score. The higher the score, the better, the lower the worse. For the daily rankings, I also create aggregate scores for the majors and the Alt markets. The Alts get a 10 point deduction any time the majors go below zero, since overall the Alt-market has a tough time staying above water when BTC is in a spiral.

This isn't financial advice, just my own way of trying to make sense of what's out there. And as with most things, the more data I collect, hopefully, the more interesting it'll be. This is a work in progress. Please leave suggestions on how to make it better. I imagine if I keep up with it, I'll be able to expand a bunch of the analysis, but I wanted to start somewhere.
