Coinbase does not have the option to trade all the small coins, what most people do is link there bank to coinbase to buy Bitcoin with cash and then transfer Bitcoin to Poloniex or bittrex to trade for smaller coins, bittrex has more options for alt coins, then if people want to cash out to bank then they sell back to Bitcoin and cash it out through coinbase.
