Ledger Hardware wallet adds support for NEO - Chrome NEO wallet app now downloadable! 👍
Great news for NEO holders who own a Ledger Nano S hardware wallet! The Ledger Wallet now finally offers a NEO wallet app for download from the official Chrome store/Ledgerwallet website.
Communitymember Coranos2 from the NEO subreddit has been writing the code for the past weeks for the Ledger Hardware wallet to support NEO, and the code has finally been added by the people at Ledger! You can now download the official NEO app for your Ledger Nano wallets. I already tried it, and it installed without a problem (even though I already have BTC, ETH and STRAT wallets on there - I was worried about lack of space but glad to see it is no issue). All you need to do is run the Ledger Manager app and scroll down and select the NEO app to install from the list.
Once you've done that, the app is now installed on the Ledger hardware wallet. Great!
Unfortunately the wallet doesn't quite work yet, as the software wallet that will connect to the Ledger has not been released yet. In a post on Reddit coranos2 explains how he thought Ledger would release the app in a week from now, and he was caught off guard by the early release. The NEON software wallet version which will be able to connect to the Ledger Nano S is near completion, and we can expect it to arrive in a few days from now I believe. From then on, you will be able to store your NEO safely on the wallet.
And yes, you should also be able to claim your GAS, as it uses the same interface as the old NEON wallet that we've been using!
I'll be keeping you up to date as to when the NEON wallet that allows access to the Ledger is released! And I will be trying it out myself!
Just as an fyi, you can use all of the wallets you need on the Nano S without worrying about space. You just can't have them all on there at the same time.
For instance, let's say you're hardly ever going to be transferring NEO anywhere and you want to have the ETH wallet on there most of the time. You can actually install the NEO wallet, add your coins, then delete the NEO wallet from the Nano S and add the ETH wallet and use it.
Then whenever you need to get to your NEO you can just delete your ETH wallet from the Nano and reinstall the NEO wallet and all your coins will still be there. It's definitely a little inconvenient, but still nice that it's an option.
I recommend you give it a try with a small amount of coins first and you'll see what I'm talking about. I was worried about running out of space and learned this was an option. I tested it myself to make sure and it worked for me.
