cryptos keep defying traditional investment: W.t.h are cryptokitties?

My growing curiosity about these funky looking cats loitering the corridors of the Ethereum Network made me read about 5 different articles today trying to understand what they are and why they are valuable or even fun to rear. Although I have seen a couple of kitties giveaway in the contest section of Steemit recently, I had never taken time to research it further but my interest was spurred by a surprising article by an indian crypto blog "Coinsutra" which said people have spent more than $4m (yes, $4,000,000) on these kitties since they first made their way into the crypto world.

Apparently, people interested in the game get started by buying their kitties with Ether through MetaMask. They rear the cats and also pay about 0.3028 Ether to breed these kitties and can either sell the offspring immediately or HODL and sell later ( is that not interesting? rearing, breeding and selling digital cats). I have also read stories about people selling rare kitties for up to 250 Ether. ( sounding more crazy than interesting now), and I know most of us' biggest dream is to rear digital cats with our free time and make it big without having to deal with the litters or buy milk and all the other cat problems.

While crypto kittens are not crypto currencies themselves, they are a form of digital collectibles with sentimental value like the digital gold from the old Ultima Online and other popular game assets (Although, most in-game assets have direct use cases within games e.g power up, I dont know the long term plan for these kitties, I hope some day, priced cat fight will be introduced to make it more fun). However, all these made me think about the evolving nature of investment and assets in the age of the blockchain technology. Its generally accepted that the pricing of investment assets is based on consensus value which is driven by scarcity, rarity, usefulness (intrinsic value) and it's good to know that digital currencies and assets simulate these to a good extent e.g they have maximum number of coins/units issued and most of them have promising use cases e.g Ether for distributed apps and smart contracts, Bitcoin for decentralized banking and steem for rewarding meaningful social media interaction but then, these kitties are on a totally different level.

Although I do not plan to buy (or technically, invest) in these kitties at any point in the future, I can't just help in thinking what happens to all the money invested by digital cat lovers when the world develop a strong allergy to cats or when public attention shifts to some bigger and more fun applications emerging off the blockchain technology. But to be sincere, I would love to receive a gift kitty some time, I just don't know if I'm bold enough to buy one right now.
