Years ago when my younger cousin asked what type of degree I thought she should get I told her to look at job listing websites. To me, it made more sense to see what employers in the area were looking for in a candidate rather than just pick something from a college course list.

I still think this is a good idea, and now the block chain has found a way to automate it. Open Source University is heading an ambitious project to turn the education industry on its head. It's a long time coming, and I think most people are fed up with the current system, but how will it work?

Open Source University has many functions, but one of its main goals is to act as a ledger. This means that all of your education, credits, and skills will be stored on the block chain. All of this data will be used to help project the needs of tomorrow's businesses.

Just like that, you can look into your Ethereum based crystal ball, and you'll know exactly what you need to do to prepare yourself for tomorrow's job market. The platform can then suggest courses for you or skills that you can add to your repertoire, effectively building you a map for the future.

What could you do with these suggestions? Maybe with some small additions to your education you could be a lot happier in another job? Perhaps, with an added skill you could be due a big raise in your current salary. Or, maybe you'd just like to cross train to another job type to keep your options open for the future?

These suggestions will be based on both things that employers are searching for right now, and skills that are deemed to be in demand in the coming years. So where does big academia come into play? Well, institutions will of course be able to use the platform to advertise their courses. At the current moment, education is very expensive. I hope a platform like this will benefit students by forcing schools and programs to be more competitive. The platform will lower the cost of acquiring new students which I hope they will then be able to pass on as savings to those taking their courses.

That's not the only thing that this system can do though. Not only can it show you the future, but it can also grant your wish of getting a job! Learners are just a small part of the puzzle. Employers will also be using the system. Business is slow to change though, and you may be wondering why they would adopt this new system. What's in it for them? The magic words that get businesses to do anything. Reduced overhead.

Finding new employees costs a lot of time and money. Especially highly skilled employees for very specific jobs. Some of these places will even hire a recruiter to find these employees for them. The fee for this can be as much as 20-30% of that employee's first year salary! In high paying fields that's a lot of money, but it can be very difficult to find the right person for these highly skilled positions so they pay it.

What if all of a sudden it was a LOT easier. Imagine now, that everyone's information is on the block chain. Your potential employer sets a few filters to get rid of unqualified people. They add in whatever special skills they need the person they hire to have, and then up pops your file of course.

After all, you've been using that neat little crystal ball to fine tune your resume and skill set to help you get the perfect job right? The employer has saved a ton of money on his recruiting costs, and the candidates have access to the best jobs regardless of their location in the world. What if you never had to submit a resume again? I guess we're going to find out.
