Its the kind of thing where you take a risk on mining the cheaper coins like UbiQ and musicoin for example we were banking 300-400 musicoin per day mining and it's a penny right now. If it hits a dollar we made a few grand. UbiQ same thing but we only make about 4 coins a day. If it goes up, the mining was still worth the investment and time

Its Hashimoto just like ethereum. I use the ether miner CUDA build and hodlpool
You can do musicoin and UbiQ with the same as ethereum. Populous is an erc20 token... Not sure about iota
I've been looking into mining but the price of GPU's skyrocketed and the ROI is pretty far out now so I backed off and never set up a rig.

I just looked again at the price of GPU's. Rigs are not cheap to build these days.
Nope! About a grand to set up the barebones PC then 500$ per card
I've seen a few for cheaper that will work but that is really the standard. Just saw a motherboard the other day that will handle 13 cards.
