Video game cryptocurrencies
I've just discovered video game cryptocurrencies. There are three that are on my radar:
- BitCrystals (BCY) - game token for Spells of Genesis, a trading card game like Magic the Gathering
- Nexium (NXC) - game token for Beyond the Void, a space-based MOBA* (currently in pre-beta)
- GameCredits (GAME) - game token for multiple games?
I'm most intrigued with the latter two because it seems to me that GAME is multipurpose and NXC supports the type of game I'd like to play.
Price trends for these currencies have all been up (along with most other alt coins, lately). But before I invest, I'll do more research on the games, development teams, currency fundamentals, etc.
Video game cryptocurrencies are a great idea that could change the face and economies of gaming. For all the time spent playing, it certainly would be nice to be rewarded in currencies that can be traded on exchanges in the real world. It may take a couple of years, but I think video game cryptocurrencies could really take off. I look forward to watching developments in this sector and seeing what breaks out.
* MOBA means 'Multi-player Online Battle Arena'. Usually 3 vs 3 or 5 vs 5 players. (Non-cryptocurrency) examples are Vainglory, Heroes of the Storm, Dota 2, Strife.
Thanks for the insight @magician8. I realise you wrote this quite a while back, but I just want to add that we at Hash Rush are also launching a 'video game cryptocurrency' called Rush Coin (RC). Hash Rush is a strategy game where your in-game mining activity is backed by actual hash power from a crypto mining farm.
We've just finished our pre-sale and our ICO starts on 20 September. Make sure to follow our account if you're interested our take a look at our website! :)
Great insight! GameCredits is actually used in two games right now. Fragoria (an MMORPG) and Get the Gun (a third person shooter). In about a month we are releasing the GameCredits Mobile Store which will host 300 mobile games that can be found on google play and the app store. We plan to have thousands of games in the near future. Gaming cryptocurrencies have fantastic followings and great promise, and we have a deep respect for the other projects working in this space as well.
Many people do this already with many of the online games (whether the publisher/developer supports it or not). I am not sure about it but I hear about gaming groups all over the world making bank selling in game currencies and the like for real world money.
It is great to see cryptocurrencies make the jump though.

What about ION :)
Exactly. I feel as if video games definitely could and should use their own form of currency, crypto works well. Maybe one company will try to make a currency that all video game platforms could use.
