NYTimes on Crypto Utopia in Puerto Rico

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago

Nellie Bowles writes an interesting sort-of-hit-piece in the New York Times about the "Puertopia" scene in Puerto Rico. link

But somehow, the sub-communication is that there is something really bad about men and boys.

The sneering tone of the article begins with:

"They call what they are building Puertopia. But then someone told them, apparently in all seriousness, that it translates to “eternal boy playground” in Latin."

"And these men — because they are almost exclusively men — have a plan for what to do with the wealth"

She takes a little jab at the so-called leader of the movement, Brock Pierce, by stretching out very far to associate him with uber-misogynist Steve Bannon, who apparently raised venture capital for IGE back in the day.

The comments section also includes a litany of hate, with more slurs against boys and men:
eternal boys
playground
jackals
ponzi scheme
neo-imperialism
bizarre
Lord of the Flies
wacky
scary
opportunism
greed
blockchain blockheads
bums
cult
dystopian
man children

Whether these crypto-utopians are good or bad for Puerto Rico remains to be seen but the pious platitudes and male-bashing are very unhelpful in the discussion.
