Cryptojacking And How It Can Affect You

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

Hello Dtubers, and Steemians! Today I want to go over something that is VERY important to remember when dealing with Cryptocurrencies, and that is Best Security Practices. There have been many people who have lost some or all of their Cryptocurrency because of the lack of online storage, and security practices. In this video I am going over some of the ways that Hackers will attempt to use your Computer resources to Mine Crypto, and what you can do to make it harder or “prevent” it from happening.

Cryptojacking Is An Issue

I’m sure you have heard for the past month or so that people are having issues with Cryptojacking. Let's first briefly go over what Cryptojacking is. It is a way that digital criminals can earn a nice passive income by hijacking your computer's resources to Mine Cryptocurrencies. The most common type of crypto that is mined because of its Anonymity is Monero with the most common script “Coinhive”. What the Hacker does is inject mining code into popular websites and infect computers that visit the website. The way it works is the user has to be actively viewing the website, the injected mining code then uses your browser to mine Crypto. As you may already know there are MANY Businesses and or websites that use the Javascript library. Unfortunately, many of these computer systems aren't always updated to the latest update releases manually. So since they are on an Auto Update feature the updates aren't pushed daily or even weekly sometimes. Which is why it’s very important to have a good IT person monitoring and maintaining the Network, never Gimp on a good IT guy/or gal, I can’t stress this enough. System Network security is essential in all Business. (Shout out to all the IT guru’s out there and job security..*wink *wink).

How To Prevent Cryptojacking?

Well, there a few things you can do to make it harder for the Hackers to use your Computer's resources while browsing the internets.

A good Addon for Firefox and Opera named “Mining-Blocker”. You can check it out here: http://mining-blocker.com/how-it-works/. Or just head over to the Firefox or Opera Addon and search for it. What it does is it scans the visited website for any mining scripts that may be present on the site and disables them. It also scans the URL against a list of Blacklisted sites that are known to have malicious mining scripts on them.

A Browser addon like Firefox’s NoScript Security Suite: https://noscript.net/getit. This is more of a General solution because it disables ALL Javascript loading in your browser and gives you the option to only run Javascript on sites that you allow.

Active Malware protection like Malwarebytes at https://malwarebytes.com. This is a very good Malware blocker, that not only Actively Monitors your browsing activity but also block any desktop application that may attempt to install Malware on your computer. Malwarebytes has an awesome team constantly watching and looking for bad stuff on the internet.

All right guys! We went over what Cryptojacking is, and how it can ruin your day. Because of the nature of Crypto, and how it is used daily, best security practices is very important when dealing in everyday on and offline activities. Good info--important reminder.

Thanks @gjones15! I think people get complacent and open themselves up to vulnerabilities. Stay Frosty out there!
