12 Must Know Cryptocurrency Expressions
12 Crypto Expressions that everybody in crypto space should know
1. HODL - “Hold on for dear life"
→ So basically, “HODL” was originally a typo which has now gained popularity among crypto traders. The term HODL appeared for the first time on the Bitcoin talk forum back in 2013 and came from a member named GameKyuubi under the thread name “I AM HODLING”.
2. FOMO - "Fear of missing out"
→ The feeling when you see a big green candlestick on a chart from a coin you are watching, but you don’t own that coin, so you sell your other coins to buy into that particular coin. As crypto trading is still very much driven by emotions rather than valuation, FOMO is a huge factor to consider when you are swing trading in crypto.
3. ATH - “All time high”
→ This means that the price of a certain cryptocurrency or coin has broken its all time high and all of its previous records and is trading at its highest price ever.
4. FUD - "Fear, uncertainty, and doubt"
→ This term usually refers to investors who are unsure of the potential of a certain situation.
5. WHALE
→ From casino parlance: a trader with a fat account, usually the one who is bullish on the price of any cryptocurrency. These people are also referred to as bullish whales.
6. BEAR
→ This is an expression borrowed from the Wall Street people. This means a trader/investor who believes the prices of a particular cryptocurrency or market will fall and wants to profit from that fall.
7. BEARWHALE
→ By extension, a big-time trader who is bearish on the price of a cryptocurrency.
A BearWhale is a dangerous creature because he/she/it tries to sell large quantities of a specific cryptocurrency on the open market, lowering the price for everyone else. The only known sighting of one in the wild occurred on October 2014 on the Slovenian Bitstamp exchange. The BearWhale was trying to unload 30,000 bitcoins in a single order—at the time worth over $9 million, and today roughly $321 million.
8. BAGHOLDER
→ This is an investor or a trader who has been holding (or hodling) for too long on a particular cryptocurrency and now has to face the consequences of that decision.
9. REKT
→ This term was borrowed from online gaming slang. It means "to get utterly destroyed or ruined". One trader on r/bitcoin put out this elegiac call after one of bitcoin’s many crashes: “MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR ALL OF THOSE #REKT ON MARGIN CALLS”
10. CHOYNA
→ A deliberately distorted way of referring to China, a country that is hugely influential to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, because it’s where the most trading and mining activity occurs.
11. TO THE MOON
→ This refers to a crypto’s upward momentum as it keeps climbing in price, as in, “The price of this coin will one day go to the moon!”.
12. ADDY
→ This refers to a specific cryptocurrency public address (or key). For example: “Tell me your ADDY, please.”
