Are Cryptocurrencies the new Pokemon?
As a recent convert to the place of cryptocurrency in a digitally connected global economy, I ponder the questions that vex us all. Three clear determinants in value would appear to be functionality, security and uptake. Will it then come down to branding? If branding is the key, then a number of cryptocurrencies come to mind which any internet search will reveal.
Gold has traditionally been a safe-haven counterweight to fiat currencies. I would suggest that land serves the same function. Living on a continent that is mostly desert underlines the continued value of land - as a food source, as a site for conducting business and as a home. In a country like Australia, higher value attaches to coastal locations predominantly because of the moderating influence of the sea on climate. It’s nice to step outside without being fried or frozen.
Then there is scarcity. Who doesn’t remember the Pokemon craze of the late nineties and early noughties? What killed the uptake of Pokemon was the exponential creation and release of a bewildering array of new pocket monsters to the market, multiplying faster than ants. Little eyes glazed over at the onset of monster fatigue. Like marbles and yo-yos, the phase was over. Pokemon appetite was killed with an oversupply. Desire died with satiety.
Could the proliferation of an ever-increasing array of cryptocurrencies in the market lead to cryptocurrency fatigue? What will trigger the tipping point? After the uptake, will we charge lemming-like for the exits to fall off the cliffs, along with the price of our winter nut store?
As I sit typing this, I roll my solid gold necklace with the delicate hand-wrought filigree reflectively in my fingers. I purchased it in 2013. It’s worth at least what I paid for it then, and considerably more than the vehicle I was driving at the time – the gold retained its value, the vehicle did not.
Nothing is constant in our worlds. Value is in the eye of the beholder. The human gaze is as perpetually evolving as the focus of our interest. Like hummingbirds, we’ve moved to the next bright flower that offers promise of a sugar-hit. In a bed of flowers, we’re spoilt for choice. To a degree, we all suffer from a form of ADD. We are all subject to the shifting tides of global interest, and ultimately, pocket monster fatigue.
Good point that many people forget to consider ie demand and supply relationship to price, upped
