[Cryptocurrency] Bitcoin Gold Team Announce BTGPay Program

The team behind Bitcoin Gold (BTG) have recently announced the launch of BTGPay, a new program which will accelerate the adoption of Bitcoin Gold as a payment cryptocurrency and drive the growth of the payment ecosystem around BTG.

The program revolves around two initiatives; the Partner Program and Branding. The BTGPay Partner program will help merchants find payment service providers to integrate BTG and other crypto payment systems into their existing eCommerce or payment solutions. Second, the BTGPay branding program will help merchants easily signal that they accept BTG, and help consumers quickly spot those merchants.

This is definitely a step in the right direction for the rather new cryptocurrency project. Bitcoin Gold was launched back in mid-November 2017 with the aim of reducing the centralization of Bitcoin mining by returning mining power to individuals and restore the network effects that follow when mining revenues are broadly distributed, just like with Bitcoin in the early years.

One of the biggest problems facing all cryptocurrencies right now, other than stability with growth, is encouraging the use of cryptocoins as payment. For cryptocurrencies to replace the current banking system, they need to be able to be used just like todays fiat currencies. The announcement from the BTG team shows that they are focusing on the right problems in order to help their project grow. I was a bit smitten with Bitcoin Gold when it first launched, as the idea of putting the power back into the hands of the individual, rather than whoever has the most hash power, appeals to my sensibilities. Many were dismissive of this new Bitcoin fork, and it certainly hasn't been performing as well as other Bitcoin forks, but hopefully this is the news the BTG community needs to help drive growth and mass adoption.
