FUD, FOMO, HODL what does it mean?

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago (edited)

When you read about Bitcoin, or any other cryptocurrency, especially the articles about markets, people's reaction to rate changes and so on, you will more than once come across the terms FUD, FOMO, HODL. What do they mean?

FUD

FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt. This is used to describe a reason for people to quickly sell their coins when the markets are (or seem to be) going down. It is also used as Fear and Unfounded Doubt.

FOMO

This is kind of the opposite of FUD. FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out. This happens when markets go up, or when there is a buzz on markets going up. People want to buy coins right away, without checking the numbers to see if the rumour could be true. They don't want to find themselves without coins when prices rise to a new high.

HODL

HODL doesn't exactly stand for anything other than HOLD being misspelled. This happened in a post by someone who explained how his emotions often got in the way of making rational dicisions where it concerned his cryptocoins. Due to FUD and FOMO he bought at the wrong time and sold at the wrong time. His advice was to HODL when things went south and just wait for better times. Then he realized he misspelled it and said 'I'll write it again coz I am aware I misspelled it'. He then misspelled it again. This post went viral. Now everyone uses HODL when meaning HOLD. There is even merchandise using the phrase.

Final note

Whatever you do, do NOT invest in cryptocoins (or anything else) unless you have money you can afford to lose.
