I thought Ripple was worth less than 1 cent at 1 time?

I don't know what people expect. XRP had a war chest worth of a pre-mined coin. They were going to need to sell it at some point to keep the lights on.

It will be interesting to see where XRP stands after the next bull run if they're able to keep up or start fading like other cryptos except Bitcoin and Ethereum eventually do.
