Cryptocurrency: My Mining Rig

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone,
Thank you for reading my blog. I like to share with everyone my experiences in mining cryptocurrency.

On December 13, 2017, I ordered my computer parts from Amazon and Newegg. I was "stoked" and at the same time I regretted the purchase. Cost me roughly ~$1000.

Here's the list of computer parts:
1 x MSI Z270-A Pro Motherboard
5 x Onvian pcie risers
1 x EVGA 1200W PSU
1 x Sandisk SSD
1 x Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8gb
1 x Intel Celeron CPU
1 x 4gb RAM

Couple days have passed and I purchased 3 more graphics card at around $300 a piece.
2 x Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8gb
1 x Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8gb Special Edition
Another day or two pass and I bought 2 more,
1 x Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8gb
1 x Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8gb (thought this one was a Nitro+ when i bought it)

On Christmas Eve 2017, I got off work and went to Home Depot to buy material to build my computer frame, it cost me $12 dollars. Gorilla glue, Husky hand saw, and 3 - 8' wood. IMG_20171221_211556.jpg

Took some measurements of my parts and drew some plans for the frame.
12" x 24" x 12" - Test fit. (That was a "Feels Good" moment)

I got the frame in the house and started placing parts on the frame. Five minutes later I went back into the garage and added a couple more wood to the base and the sides of the frame to give it more structure.

Hooked up the monitor and fired up the machine (Another "Feels Good" moment). IMG_20171222_192509.jpg

Next day (Christmas Day), I got the rig mining Ethereum (ETH) and Decred (DCR). Each card mines at 30Mh/s for ETH and 900Mh/s for DCR.orca-image-1514052994162.jpg_1514052994511.jpeg

Here's the mining machine running 5 x Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8gb, the Pulse model has yet to make its way into the machine. IMG_20171227_183557.jpg

That will be it for now and Thank you again for reading. Next blog will probably be about the troubles that I went through optimizing this rig. If you have comments, questions, or suggestions please let me know.

Looks like a solid setup, I️ have been debating on building one but not sure if it’s worth it with the power it uses. Keep us posted

Thank you, I'll put up some numbers and calculations for you in my next blog.

VERY cool man, can you update us when you mine your first coins?
Very curious how long it will take you to get an Ether block especially, as wouldn't that pay for your rig the first time it happens?

If you're into Decred or crypto speculations, we have a one-day rec on it in this commentary...

Following you, give us updates please on the mining results.

I'll keep you posted when i get my very first coin. Getting that one block could pay for my rig, but there's too much competition. Nice info on those poopcoins.

Congratulations @gam9p, you have decided to take the next big step with your first post! The Steem Network Team wishes you a great time among this awesome community.

congrats on the rig, I must be 35 rigs deep by now. One thing to watch for is power with the 1200w and 6x RX580's. I've had a few problems with rigs even though the reading is for 1080watts at the wall.

Thanks for the heads up, I just added the sixth card and its doing ok so far. It's pulling just a couple watts over 1000. I'll make sure to keep a close eye on the power it is pulling. Also, your house looks awesome, modern and elegant.

No worries! and thank you :D
