Ghost month: is trading affected?? opportunity or FUD?

The 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar is called Ghost Month. They say that on the first day of the month, the Gates of Hell are sprung open to allow ghosts and spirits access to the world of the living. The spirits spend the month visiting their families, feasting, and looking for victims. 

Since there are more spirits about during ghost month, believers are advised to exercise caution in everything they do, just so they don’t attract unwanted attention from wandering spirits. Big events, such as weddings, baptisms, moving houses, and business openings should not be held, lest they be saddled with ill luck. Big decisions such as contract signing and buying big-ticket items should be postponed until the next month. Even the Stock Exchange feels the effects of the ghost month.

Buddhists believe that the festival began when a Buddhist monk, having attained enlightenment, decided to check on his parents in the afterlife. He found that his mother was suffering in hell, so he asked the Buddha how he could save her. He was instructed to offer food and participate in rituals so that eventually, he helped his mother’s soul leave hell and reincarnate. Today, sacrifices of food, incense, and hell notes (folded paper that are burned so they can be used as currency in the Chinese afterlife), are offered to honor one’s deceased ancestors and to help lost spirits

The seventh month of the lunar calendar isn’t about being scared of everything. For believers, it is about looking back with respect on one’s ancestors, practicing compassion on those who have passed on, and reflecting on the importance of being a good person in this life. For everyone looking to be on the safe side, it’s a time to slow down and reflect on decisions postponed, and to work slowly, steadily, and smart on what is already on your plate.

There are 3 main days during the month that are particularly important:

HONORING THE DEAD

On the first day of the month, ancestors are honored with offerings of food, incense, and ghost money—paper money which is burned so the spirits can use it

GHOST FESTIVAL

The 15th day of the month is Ghost Festival, sometimes called Hungry Ghost Festival This is the day when the spirits are in high gear. It’s important to give them a sumptuous feast, to please them and to bring luck to the family.

Taoists and Buddhists perform ceremonies on this day to ease the sufferings of the deceased.

CLOSING GATES

The last day of the month is when the Gates of Hell close up again. The chants of Taoist priests inform the spirits that it’s time to return, and as they are confined once again to the underworld, they let out an unearthly wail of lament.

In 2017, the Ghost Month runs from Aug. 22 to Sept. 19. 

The countries which have a “ghost month” include :

China, which is the base of NEO,

Japan, which is the home nation of OmiseGo, 

Singapore, which is the headquarters of TenX.

 People in these countries have a belief that it is a particularly bad time to invest in anything during the month.

A slow month does not necessarily equate to a stock or a cryptocurrency’s intrinsic value. In fact, many long term holders may take advantage of such a situation to slowly accumulate while prices are down.

So for the people in the western world this might be an opportunity to scoop up some nice bargains if one goes about it in the correct way.
