CRYPTerminology 101 for New Crypto Enthusiasts

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago (edited)

Hello, hello! If you are reading this I assume you to be either a crypto-enthusiast or is on your way in being one. Or you simply love me and would check this even if the term "cryptocurrency" or "blockchain" hurts your brain (as it hurt mine when I first heard about these.

This is actually inspired by some of my favorite steemians, @immarojas, @bearone and @st3llar, who recently took the plunge in exploring crypto investments other than STEEM and SBD. We would encounter terms like FOMO or ATH and they wouldn't have a clue as to what these are.

So here's a quick reference to some of the common ones that I know of.

FOMO

An acronym for FEAR OF MISSING OUT.

Use case:

Price of coin X has been up for days and it appears to be unstoppable. everyone talks about it, lots of good news and updates on it too. Coin x just seems everywhere. Buy low sell high they say. But with everything you hear, it seems there's no going down for coin X. Uh-oh, just as you are composing your thoughts coin X went up again. Your crypto friends who has been in the coin for a while have been telling you to buy it. You check the charts and it is still going up.

You buy the coin for fear of missing out on the ride to the moon.

FIAT

Currencies isued and backed by central banks. Examples of this are Philippine Peso, US Dollars, Japanese Yen, and many others.

Use Case

You are new in crypto and joined an ICO that doubled your money.

Someone asks, "Is that 2x ETH or Fiat?"

You confidently answers, "2x ETH, I threw in 2 on the ICO and sold it for 4 . I think it's now 6x in FIAT as ETH also had a good run."

Well done you.

FUD

Acronym for FEAR, UNCERTAINTY and DOUBT. This is usually done if someone wants to accumulate a coin at a lower price. Negative news will be spread in the hope that a panic sell is triggered.

Use Case

Coin x had been doing so well. You're quite glad to have bought some and is at a comfy gain. Then you see a sudden crash! Suddenly you are flooded with the news that the CEO has sold most of his coin and is abandoning ship! Although the major sites hasn't said anything yet, it must be true because it reflects on the price. Somebody has been spreading this news!

You think about selling. While doing so, the price is now below your buy price. You sold immediately, you'd want to cut your losses.

Somebody buys your coins.

The team finally makes an announcement and clears up the FUD. All untrue.

The price goes back up. Even higher than the last high.

Somebody is happy.

HODL

Yup, you're reading it right. The Legend of Hodl says that, once upon a time, in the magical world of bitcoin forum, a gallant gentleman whilst drunk had made this typo. He meant to say HOLD but keyed in HODL instead.

Unbeknownst to him, this will change the entire crypto-world drastically.

Some had been coining this as Hold On for Dear Life.

Use Case

Your friend announces the news that coin x which you both invested on has doubled its price. He tells you he is planning to sell and move on to buy coin y. He asks if you're selling too.

You replied,

Nope, I'll HODL.

And the price goes 100x a week after.

Lambo

What everyone in the crypto-community wants to buy when they become rich as f....art. Mine will be a baby pink one. Although you don't really mean to buy one when you do become rich as f.

Use Case

You: I just had a 100x on this ICO.

Friend: Time to get a lambo!!!!

Mooning

Refers to prices going crazy high. So crazy that it goes as high as the moon! Moon of Pluto that is.

Use Case

Monday- coin x price at $1
Tuesday- coin x price at $2
Wednesday- coin x price at $4

Coin x has been mooning for days!!!!

U-N-S-T-O-P-A-B-L-E.

Altcoin

Any coin or token that is NOT Bitcoin. So, Bitcoin is Bitcoin, and all the rest of the thousand-plus currencies are all altcoins.

Use Case

You learned that your friend has recently started investing in crypto. You ask,

Is your portfolio more on BTC or ALTCOINS?

Coins

Have their own blockchain and is created together with the blockchain. Sample of these are Bitcoin, Ethereum, Neo, Waves

Tokens

These are created using a smart contract on top of a coin. Examples are Bounty0x and BlockV on Ethereum network, Redpulse in Neo, Dash on Bitcoin.

Whale

Someone who owns an insane amount of crypto. Insane amount that will make your head dizzy with zeroes. Very wealthy and can possibly influence/move the market.

ATH

Acronym for All-Time-High, or the highest achieved price of a coin or token. News on new ATH makes everyone, specially holders, pret-ty hap-py.

Bullish

Means the force is strong for the coin to go up up up.

Bearish

Means the coin is being spiraling down, seemingly journeying towards the center of the earth.

MCAP

Market Capitalization, this is the total industry worth of a coin or token. Formula is SUPPLY multiplied by PRICE.

ICO

Acronym for Initial Coin Offering, which is similar to IPO, you get a chance to buy a token or coin upon its launch.

ROI

Return on Investment, meaning how soon were you able to take back the invested amount. ROIx is also very common, meaning how many times your initial investment has grown.

Use Case:

You bought 100 units of coin x for $100. A week after coin x is priced at $10 each. Your $100 is now $1000. Congrats, you have and ROIx of 10!

JOMO

Acronym for Joy Of Missing Out, meaning one is just too glad they missed the FOMO and missed the bandwagon. More oftenly, this is felt when the coin has been receiving attention at such a high price and the price was not sustained.

Rekt

Having a pretty bad loss on an investment.

Reverse INDbICATOR

Someone whose price movement calls, turns out to be the opposite. The best approach with their calls is to go the other way.

These are but some of the many terms in the crypto universe. I'm sure more evolution on this as it goes mainstream.
For now, my dream is to become a whale, by hodling, and hopefully no rekt trades and mooning icos. Hahaha until next time!
