Can anyone explain to me what would happen to the owners of Bitcoin if there is a fork in the cryptocurrency?

After watching a few talks at Consensus 2017 I doubt a Fork is going to happen. It's more likely that Bitcoin will adopt Segwit or some other technology to address it's issues.
