Segregated Witness will officially activate on Bitcoin

Segwit has already reached its locked-in threshold this Tuesday, August 08, 2017. It locked-in at block 479, 707 as 100% of mining pools signaled support to the proposal. The block was mined by BitClub according to the network data.

However, the change will still be unusable as the network will still move into about 2 weeks grace period to give mining pools and users the opportunity to upgrade their software. After that, Segwit will activate and miners will begin rejecting blocks that do not support the change, which will roughly happen in August 21, 2017.

Litecoin was able pull off Segwit last year and now its Bitcoin's turn.

Overall Market Capital Reached A New High

The collective market capital of cryptocurrencies exceeded $120 billion this Tuesday. It doubled its value in just 3 weeks since lowest drop last month. That day also, Bitcoin's price reached an all time high of $3,290.01 according to Coinmarketcap.com and even reached a high of $3,423.10 on other exchanges such as Bitstamp. Bitcoin's market capital has also been boosted to nearly $56 billion, based on a universe of about 16.5 million tokens.

In terms of returns, cryptocurrencies are so far the best-performing investment asset this year with 600% total returns.
