High GPU Demand Causing Problems in Alien Exploration
We're all aware of the current situation and popularity of the cryptocurrency.People are trying to mine and they can't mine if they don't have GPU's.News are circling around that the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) is struggling to acquire the right amount of graphics processing units in order to continue their work.
How did it come to this ?
How did it really come to this ? The answer is simple.. Cryptocurrency wasn't as popular in the past as it is now because people could not see the potential that the projects have. The moment they started realizing what crypto offers everyone got interested in it and they wanted to get involved.People started building their own mining rigs, they kept buying rigs that are already built from other companies all in order to mine currencies which could potentially make them money.
Why does the SETI have problems with it ?
“We’d like to use the latest GPUs [graphics processing units]… and we can’t get ’em,” SETI researcher Dan Werthimer told the BBC. “This is a new problem, it’s only happened on orders we’ve been trying to make in the last couple of months.”
SETI, as well as other observatories searching for alien life, depend on GPUs to scan data from listening arrays in an attempt to intercept extraterrestrial communications.“At SETI we want to look at as many frequency channels as we possibly can because we don’t know what frequency ET will be broadcasting on and we want to look for lots of different signal types – is it AM or FM, what communication are they using?” explained Dr. Werthimer, who is chief scientist at the Berkeley SETI Research Center.
Solution
Is this going to change in the future ? There are rumors going on that the GPU demand will decrease as Bitmain and other cryptocurrency mining hardware manufacturers develop ASICs for more Proof-of-Work (PoW) hashing algorithms and Ethereum begins its transition to Proof-of-Stake (PoS). Hopefully this is going to calm down both SETI and everyone that wants to enjoy gaming without worrying that they won't be able to find a GPU to buy.
