Facebook would launch its cryptocurrency in 2019

New rumors claim that the leader of social networks would like to launch his cryptocurrency and would already be in discussion with cryptos exchanges to list his "Facebook coin" (ndlr non-contractual name).

According to the New York Times, relying on Facebook wants to "succeed where Bitcoin failed" by launching its own cryptocurrency.

What we learn in the article:

• Facebook would be discussing with several cryptocurrency exchanges "about the sale of its cryptocurrency".

• This cryptocurrency would be for the WhatsApp application (owned by Facebook), to allow users to send instant payments to friends and family.

• This cryptocurrency would be stablecoin, backed by different traditional currencies (not just the dollar, like many other stablecoins).

• About fifty engineers would work in the biggest secret on this cryptocurrency project. For this, the team would work in offices located away from other employees and accessible only with a special badge.

• The launch of this cryptocurrency would be considered in the first half of this year.

If these new rumors are proven, this is a new step in Facebook's entry into the Crypto sector after the creation in May 2018 of a blockchain research group led by the former director Messenger and ex-president of Paypal, David Marcus.
