Is the Gladius Project an attempt to turn us into DDoS fighting Superheroes ?
Reading the Gladius WhitePaper my memory flips me to October 21st 2016
That was the day when internet's DNS infrastructure was hit by the largest DDoS attack in the history of our world.
Over 1.2 Tb/s of malicious connections brought down a lot of what was important to us. Sites like Twitter, Netflix, Reddit and CNN all completely shut down for an entire day. The result? Billions of dollars were lost in revenue because of this attack.(Source : The Guardian )
Flip to the present You need not be a CNN, Twitter or Netflix to be the target of a DDoS attack. Neither do hackers need to be super talented. A DdoS attak on your website can be executed by someone with a nasty intent and with the minimal amount of technical skill. This possible due to easy to use DDoS attack tools .
My above statement is not to scare you. Instead it is to inform about the possibilities.
Big businesses contract leading names in the CDN & Ddos protection industry who in turn charge the business owners a large fee such as $5000 per month to prevent a DDoS attack. This is a lot of money that a big corporate can pay but what about us normal folks who have small and medium businesses but not such deep pockets?
In this scenario we fell helpless and powerless to deal with such technological challenges.
To our rescue comes Gladius.
What does Gladius Do?
In very simple terms it gives us the power to fight DDoS attacks on our websites at an affordable price. This empowerment gives me the feeling of being a superhero who can take on any DDoS attack.
Technically it would create a fully decentralized, peer to peer, serverless node network to connect bandwidth and storage pools to websites looking for DDoS protection and expedited content delivery.
The aim of Gladious is to harness the power of individual desktop computers to create a fully decentralized, peer to peer, serverless node network to connect bandwidth and storage pools to websites looking for DDoS protection and expedited content delivery.
How would Gladius Perform this feat?
By empowering the people to pool their computers space bandwidth.
Anyone with a computer can download and run the Gladius software that would run in the background and rent out the unused bandwidth and storage to earn GLA the Gladius tokens.
A large pools of nodes would be created with these resources and would be able to handle continuous streams of requests. They would filter out the bad traffic and would let the good traffic pass through. The website owners would pay the GLA tokens to hire a DDoS protection and CDN network at a much lower cost what they currently pay.
This makes it a win win situation for both the websites owners and for those who are renting out their computers spare capacity.
To breathe life into this business and set the ball rolling Gladius is coming up with the ICO for the sale of its GLA tokens.
