I finally got my Leger Nano S and I'm already feeling safer ;)

Yes, not enough can be said about securing your crypto assets with a hardware wallet and not leaving more than necessary for day trading if you are into that on exchanges.

Think of a hardware wallet as a form of cold storage just like a paper wallet so your crypto assets, like bitcoin, ethereum, litecoins and altcoins can be stored offline. That way, your private keys are offline and cannot be hacked.

Yes, a hardware wallet costs money and why would anyone pay for something that might be free. But through my research and I suggest that you do yours too, I learned that the amount of security and peace of mind is a lot more valuable than the little money that one pays for the actual hardware wallet.

I'm also sure if you have any investment in bitcoin, you should be aware about the 1st August 2017 fork that is highly possible if not confirmed on the bitcoin blockchain. With the high possibility of an additional coin, bitcoin cash, experts have been advising everyone who owns bitcoin to get them out of exchanges to be sure that they will recieve the new coin.

As the whole crypto market is still very much in infantcy stage, I foresee many of such things happening in the future as the developers get ready for mass adoption. Now this will be good reason to start thinking about securing your crypto assets can can potentially be worth many folds over in the future.

Now back to my Ledger Nano S...

I'm sure that I'm not the only one giving it a thumbs up :)

It's robust and easy to use with many great reviews.

Let's unbox and see what's in the pacakge.

The USB portable thumbdrive looking device is the Ledger Nano S.

The getting started guide and the very important recovery sheets that one has to record down in own handwriting 24 words that your device will give you only once for recovering your assets and settings in the unfortunate case of a lost device. Yes, with the 24 recovery words, one can get another Leger Nano S and restore whatever was on the lost device.

The cable, lanyard and a keychain attachment for the device.

And there you have it, the entire contents that came with the Ledger Nano S that will let you sleep better at night... Ok, at least, I'm sleeping better now ;)

I recommend Ledger Nano S to secure your crypto assets.

I have heard a lot about nano.
Needy to get myself one.

If you have any crypto assets, especially bitcoin, ethereum and litecoin, I suggest you do.

Totally agree with you. Move your bitcoins out of exchanges. I had this happen to me today with coinbase
Attention ALL BITCOINers., COINBASE is placing all sorts of obstacles for us to withdraw our bitcoins to our own wallets as the hard fork date approaches. I have been verified a million times already with them, I have submitted my ID several times in the past. However, today using false pretenses they asked me to once again submit my ID and then they did NOT accept for a long time. My US PASSPORT was NOT accepted as a valid ID (WTF). After the fifth try with my drivers license was finally "VERIFIED."
And then, when I tried to move my coins to my cold storage paper wallet, they told me the transaction was suspicious and would take 72 hours to verify, after which they may or may NOT complete the transfer. They are using unjustified obstacles and under table "mafia" type tactics to prevent customers like me to withdraw and freely move our bitcoins as we best see fit. If you have bitcoins with COINBASE you should move them immediately before the hard fork otherwise you may lose Bitcoin Cash. A hard fork means you would have coins in two blockchains, which COINBASE has clearly state will NOT support. Hence, they will STEAL those coins from you. You may be running out of time with their new 72 hour review silliness.

Oh no, I'm sorry to read what is happening to you, and this just shows the importance of securing your assets and actually having the private keys than to leave all on exchanges. I hope that everything gets sorted out for you.

That is really not fair. Coinbase has a big base, but still it is acting like mafia, really feel sorry for you. thanks for sharing.

For many weeks I wondered what is a hard wallet, and now I get it. Thanks for sharing the information.
You forgot to mention the price you paid for it.

Ok thanks, 58 EURO is not a big price, but the shipping date for new orders is 4th September, and that is a big gap from now.

There's always a waiting time for shipping, they are out of stock everywhere. One can wait then wait some more.

This whole hardfork in BTC has got my brain toasted. Do you get BCC if your BTC is on a hardwallet?

Yes, don't quote me on this though, but from what I heard from the many experts out there, you will get BCC if your BTC is in a hardware wallet. But if you leave your BTC on exchanges, you are at the mercy of the exchanges on your BCC.

Very interesting and useful post, thankyou for sharing @alexthemagician. Upvoted

Thanks, glad to at least got your attention :)
