BitPay not supporting BIP 148: problem?steemCreated with Sketch.

Bitpay will not use BIP 148!

As I am sure of some of you already know both Bitpay and Copay have openly stated they won't be supporting BIP 148 because they have signed Barry's agreement. This is a problem for people who use both Copay and Bitpay as a wallet. We are not only a couple of weeks away from BIP 148 and I am concerned.

I have recently ordered the Bitpay card, and while it should not be an issue sending bitcoin into the wallet for the purposes of spending on the card, it does make the service less trustworthy in my eyes. My card is probably going to arrive in the next 5 days which I'm pretty excited about, but the idea that the Bitcoin I put in there is at risk of disappearing when the two bitcoin blockchains merge is a scary one and means that I won't be putting more than 50-100 dollars in there at any given time. This in turn means that I will have to constantly load the card when it runs low.

I was hoping to get opinions from current card holders and people who were considering it. Has this put you off using your card? Will you be looking elsewhere for a card provider?

Hey i recently asked one of my friends about this on another forum and he gave me a pretty good answer that i would like to share, it might help shed some light on the best way to go when navigating trough a hardfork.

My question was: If they don't support the BIP148, what will happen if I keep my coins in a Copay wallet and BIP148 activates. I won't get coins on both sides of the chain?

No, you will have coins on both sides of the chain. The only difference is that if a utxo split happens you will only be able to send coins on the non-BIP148 side using copay.

If you don't have a utxo split occur (there's no way to tell unless you are running a BIP148 node and a non-BIP148 node.) then using Copay will essentially be sending coins on both chains simultaneously.

Wallets that "support BIP148" will be the opposite, you will be inadvertently spending coins on a chain you are not validating and neither is your wallet provider.

The only way to safely navigate your coins properly through a sustained hardfork is to run a full node of both sides of the fork.

I now have a BIP148 backed Copay wallet, a legacy Core backed Copay Wallet, and a BU backed Copay wallet just so I can double check the balances on each.

It's a hard subject to navigate around. I think it's prudent and wise of you to just send small amounts of btc to the card to just see that everything seems to be working before sending any big amounts. More info will also probably come as time moves on :)

Peace dude!

Yeah all of that is true but it forgets what is possibly the most important thing: when BIP 148 happens, if it is a major success and gains majority support of the nodes, then the legacy bitcoin chain will be intergrated into the new BIP blockchain which would effectively wipe out all your non BIP bitcoins. You could literally fall asleep one night with 100 bitcoins in your Bitpay wallet and wake up with 0.

Diligence is key here.

ehh thanks for the heads up! Yes it truly is. :)

I have yet to buy a physical Bitcoin card and this news only makes me more hesitant. I might choose to wait for the Monaco card to come out as it seems o be a good platform to work off of and I am a fan of the card design. In addition, while I am not sure when it will be able to be purchased by the public, most likely by then, the turmoil about Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies will have settled. I would suggest keeping an eye on it as it may also be useful for purchasing things with other Cryptocurrencies in addition.

I think the TenX card will be the answer when it is released.

Thanks for pointing that out. I forgot about Tenx. I wonder which multi-crypto card will become the most popular.

After doing a fair amount of reading I'm betting on TenX currently, however something even better could be announced tomorrow. Everything moves so fast.

bitpay is cool, shows that big companies have interest in cryptocurrency

bitpay is good that growing day per day but i see this is a probleme with bip 148

It is definitely a problem, it might be only a temporary problem but it is a problem nontheless.

Hello please kindly like my post too thanks

Good info, I have the account but no card, will hold off for now.

If you have no immediate need for a crypto card I'd wait for the TenX card. It is a little while off but will blow everything else out of the water. Read the whitepaper it is very exciting stuff.

My thought (though I need to confirm it) is that once you move your BTC to the Bitpay card, it is no longer being held in bitcoins but have been converted to fiat. If you have a bitpay card, it shouldn't be effected, but your BTC in the wallet might be.
I also have a Shift card that attaches to my coinbase account. Have 2 weeks to check on how safe CB will be when it all happens, now.
