RE: Name YOUR decentralized social network?

I like CRED the best as a token name.

I agree. I have thought long and hard about this, and it has so many great qualities:

  • one syllable and 1 letter shorter than STEEM
  • most crisply rolls off the tongue (unlike mosh-mush-mash or ‘noose’))
  • connotes merit, reputation, and the act of crediting such
  • isn’t confused as Steem can be with misspellings such as Steam.
  • the plural form is spelled the same as the singular
(i.e. no need to write “pay me 10 CREDs”)

As far as each app goes, I suppose having different names is good, but with a shared token (CRED). That way even if users don't realize that two apps are part of the same overall platform, they'll put 2+2 together when they see that CRED token can be used across various apps.

This is a very important point that the token unit CRED should be visible in some way on every app. For example, when Steemians currently interact with Steemit, Dtube, or Dlive, afaik rarely is the token unit STEEMdisplayed unless they visit their wallet. Rewards are displayed prominently only in dollars. Clicking the drop-drop menu will display for example, “Pending Payout $0.30 (0.15 SBD, 0.05 SP) in 7 days”. But those abbreviations don’t brand the term STEEM. This is one of the advantages of having a very terse four letter token name, “Pending Payout $0.30 (0.20 CRED) in 7 days”. Our rewards system will be different and will probably display instead “Credited $0.30 (0.20 CRED)”. Also the prominent display could be “$0.30 (0.20 CRED)” instead of “$0.30” only as for Steemit. Additionally I would like the displayed fiat value to constantly change with the current exchange rate, so looking back in hindsight the early participants will have rewards in the perhaps $100,000s per post! Could be analogous to the 10,000 Bitcoins for a pizza history.

They other question is, how important is having different names for every app? It might be confusing. Rather, you could have one overarching name, one token and then each app is just a sub-domain.

Ex) Mosh.video, Mosh.blog, Mosh.storage, etc.

As I explained in my discussion with @pele23, the problem with putting all apps on the same domain is it violates the decentralization that is our raison d'être.

Btw, subdomains go in front of the primary domain name, so that would be video.mosh.com, blog.mosh.com, etc..

You have given me an interesting idea though. We could have the overarching domain mirror the domain for the specific apps. So for example, mosh.cred.net would be a mirror for mosh.com. Ditto candid.cred.net for candid.com, grok.cred.net for grok.com, etc.. There could be a standardized menu or button for toggling the displayed domain on the address bar of the browser, so that users could readily see that these are just mirrors for each other. This would also provide the benefit that app developers don’t need to obtain the expensive .com domains for all these apps immediately. They could use a subdomain on the overarching site interim while they grow the popularity of their app. And users would see some consistency to the madness and confusion that @pele23 noted.

For video.cred.net, the user would see the page of the wiki for all the video apps on the CRED platform. Ditto blog.cred.net, etc..

I like Mosh, Candid, Grok, Gush, Crux as names in general. They're short and catchy.

Ty. That was a leap from what I had before. This inspiration hit me as I sat down to compose this blog.

What do you think of Unglued for video app name? Come unglued from the mainstream media. Not as concise as the others though and significantly more gritty. YakekyYak or just Yak for a discussion site is less professional, but unique. For a chat and communication app, I can’t decide between Links or Junction.

Actually when I was referring to the sub-domains idea, I wasn't thinking literally about Internet domains, but more just in general. So rather than using a completely different and unrelated name for each app, you'd somehow be drawing a link between them. So the mirror idea is in line with what I was thinking!

Unglued makes sense from that perspective for sure. I like Yak though :) It's funny, short and sweet. I suppose it needs to fit into the overall picture, so it goes well with Mosh, Gush, etc. Actually I don't see how it's any less professional than those ones really. Unglued fits very nicely with Candid, Interact, Junction, etc. imo.
