Ubiq algorithm Hard Fork: UIP 1

in #crypto6 years ago (edited)

Announcing the Ubiq UIP 1 Hard Fork at block 660k...

This article follows up on the previous blog post "Introducing Ubqhash" and formally announces the UIP 1 Hard Fork with upgrade details.

Hard fork block estimated around block 660 000.

As discussed in the Introducing Ubqhash blog post, the hard fork will occur during a DAG/Epoch switch, which takes place every 30,000 blocks (approximately every 30.5 days). The next Epoch at the time of writing this is at block 630,000, which is less than a week away. This is too soon for the hard fork as it doesn’t give enough time to get everyone prepared and upgraded.

Therefore, Ubiq is scheduled to hard fork at block 660,000. This corresponds to mining Epoch 22.

Gubiq 2.0
Gubiq 2.0 full node is now available:
https://github.com/ubiq/go-ubiq/releases/tag/v2.0.1

All services which run Ubiq nodes must upgrade ASAP. Fusion wallet will be updated to point to the latest version and you will automatically be prompted to upgrade.

Ubqminer
Ubqminer open source GPU miner is now available:
https://github.com/ubiq/ubqminer/releases

Ubqminer is the fork of Ethminer provided by the community. If you currently run Ethminer, Ubqminer is a drop in replacement that will hash Ethash prior to the hard fork and automatically start hashing Ubqhash when the hard fork block arrives.

Reference repository (imported by Ubqminer) is also available:
https://github.com/ubiq/chfast-ubqhash

Open Ethereum Pool
Modified Open Ethereum Pool is now available:
https://github.com/ubiq/open-ethereum-pool

You may want to manually implement the changes in this commit (and rebuild) which is all that is necessary if you running an existing pool:
https://github.com/ubiq/open-ethereum-pool/commit/c2bc9c0d0681eba394c3636f1440e966e10e8408

If you are a pool and have upgraded, please indicate on your pool’s front page that you are UIP 1 ready.

NOTE: Ubqhash writes the DAG file to the ~/.ubqhash directory.

Outreach
This is a call to the community to please actively inform others about the Ubiq hard fork upgrade and to contact services and software providers that you currently use.

FAQ
Here are some further questions not covered in the above:

Will switching to Ubqhash effect my hashrate?

Hashrate is expected to be the same on Ethash and Ubqhash.

Will the dagfile size be increased because of it?

No, the DAG file size won’t change and will continue its normal growth curve.

What do I have to do with my coins?

Nothing. Ubiq holders can simply keep their coins on a private wallet, hardware wallet or on exchange.

Will I have to update Fusion?

Fusion will prompt you to update your version of Gubiq. The Fusion front end can remain unchanged.

Does this mean we will have two Ubiq chains like ETH and ETC?

UIP 1 was voted on by the community and had over 95% support from all participants. This hard-fork upgrade is not contentious and therefore the likelihood of a chain split is low.

Are the exchanges supporting the upgrade?

This is the first public release of the hardfork block and software. There is ample time until the fork to allow for a high chance of support from our exchange partners.

Are hardware wallets supporting the upgrade?

Your hardware wallet requires no changes to use the upgraded chain. Wallet software like Pyrus will be updated with no effect on your Ledger or Trezor.

Is ethOS, SMOS, Claymore etc. supported?

Currently there is just the fork of Ethminer available for you to run, please contact your mining software provider to support the change.

I made a script to add ubqminer to smos.

sudo bash -c "$(curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/greerso/smOS-unsupported-miners/master/addons/Ubqminer_ethminer-0.11.0.sh)"

Cool are you in our Discord group by any chance? The SMOS dev is not being to kind to the algorithm switch.
