  1. Sell Altcoin to BTC
  2. Buy XRP using the BTC
  3. Transfer the XRP to Bitstamp / Kraken exchange (takes less than 2 minutes)
  4. Cash out the XRP to cold-hard cash (USD).

XRB Nano if/when incorporated in exchanges, with its zero transfer fees, will be a preferred alternative to XRP's Ripple.
