Help biology predict and design protein structures and complexes with Rosetta@home. Of course with Gridcoin!

As many of you know, Gridcoin is not an ordinary crypto currency. It's a lot different. Different with its idea, different with the way computer idle resources are utilized and used in the favor of science - biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, astronomy. In my series of articles about Gridcoin projects, I present to you the general ideas and some facts about the whitelisted ones. Today the star is Rosetta - Rosetta@home in advance of biology and better understanding proteins.

We need to mention of course, that Rosetta@home is not for profit, and no one will take advantage of it, besides the science and biology itself. Of course all the various diseases and researches, having something in common with proteins.

Rosetta@home needs the help of everyone around in order to determine the three dimensional shapes of various different proteins being reviewed in the project, and these proteins may generally lead to some still unknown cures, connected with the most dangerous human resources. By adding the Rosetta@home in your BOINC client on your computer, you will of course speed up the research phase, as soon as you don't use all of your computer resources. This will ultimately extend the research of the project in ways, that the team wouldn't be possible to deal with, using their own computation resources only. All the efforts will be put in advantage of some major diseaces such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer's.

We can look on the proteins like small machines, building our lives. They maybe have the most critical role for building the biological frameworks and chemical ones literally in all living organisms. The main task of the proteins and the way it communicates with all different molecules is mainly determined by its shape, which is a 3D structure. Long chains of amino acids initially build up the protein and for the most part proteins will not function well before they become folded into globular structures. It is urgent to understand and predict all these folding processes in order to govern them. This involves the folding of the main part of the protein and the packing its side chains of amino acids and this is one of the general biological problems of the time. Finding many cures for the diseases will be the result of understanding these complex interactions. Millions of dollars are being spent constantly in order to determine the complex structures of proteins generally by using the help of the experimental X-ray crystallography as well as nuclear magnetic resonance. The cost of this will be decreased dramatically if it is made by the means of computer modeling. The advantage of this modelling do not end here, because scientists can design completely new structures, still not known to biology.

Finally, there's one general question and it is if the folds that are currently everywhere in nature are the limit to the capabilities of proteins... or if there are some completely different folds that are also plausible and can be generated in a way. Knowing all the rules that govern folding may probably and in my opinion will definitely help to find the answer of this generous problem.
