The face of DeepOnion

in #crypto7 years ago (edited)

Humans tend to make up a picture in their head when they hear about something. When you talk about Jesus, your imagination makes up an image of a middle-aged man with long brown hair and a long white shirt. When you want to picture a politician, you don’t forget the nice suit with a tie. When you imagine how a rocker looks, you’re most likely thinking of a bearded man with tattoos riding on a Harley Davidson motorbike.

You often know how someone looks because you’ve seen them somewhere before, but what about those who you haven’t seen in real life before?

You may not have undergone surgery before in a hospital, but you surely know how a surgeon looks like from TV or pictures on the internet. They’re usually pictured with green shirt with a mouth protection and probably a scalpel in the hand.
This is an innocent example, but what about a drug user? Do you imagine someone with a needle in their arm lying under a bridge or a Rastafari with long dreadlocks enjoying the sun?

What if this picture in our head is created by someone on purpose?
In the western world, the population has a very specific picture in their head when thinking about a terrorist. Thanks to the media and press, in their mind a terrorist looks most likely like a Muslim man with a beard and armed with a Kalashnikov, ready to die for his ideology.

But what about those who no one has ever seen? What about those who don’t want to be seen?

Superheroes wear masks to hide their identity to the public in comics and movies. Batman, Spiderman, Ironman, the list is endless. Some even copy the masks from movies and use them in real life. Usually for Halloween and Carnival people disguise themselves, but that’s not the only time you can make use of a mask.

People started to use the Guy-Fawkes-Mask on demonstrations to refer to the critic against the government from the movie “V for Vendetta”. This mask gained so much appreciation by the people who criticise the government just like in the movie that the world-famous hacker group “Anonymous” started to use it in their video messages.
When reporting about the hackers from Anonymous, the media always uses the same images, which again, creates an image in the head of the population about someone no one has ever seen.

This leaves us with the question, how do we want to picture a user that profits from the Tor Network? How does a DeepOnion user looks like?

Of course, this is only a rhetorical question, because users did not choose these services on purpose, they want to profit from the anonymity on the internet that Tor offers and want to use their money with the anonymity DeepOnion gives them.

Unfortunately, this creates a problem for all the active DeepOnion supporters that want to support their community by sharing videos or pictures of them.
Showing off your new DeepOnion wear, a tutorial or just a supportive speech, everything is better when you can interact in your video and make the show by yourself.

It’s however understandable that the anonymity of the member should not be in danger and therefore you would want to hide your face.
You could pixel your face, but only few know how to do this in a video. Wearing a mask is the easiest solution, but which mask should you use?

Some might have a ski-mask lying around or know a shop that sells these nearby, but this gives you a pretty criminal image, and you don’t want to look like you’re going to rob a bank after your video tutorial, don’t you?
Copying Anonymous by using the Guy Fawkes Mask does not give the DeepOnion Community a personal touch, it rather throws us in a pot with thousands of different intended people.

In my opinion, DeepOnion should have a custom mask that’s specially designed for our members.
It should be easy to make so that everyone can make one at home without the need to order via internet or the necessity to buy a 3D printer.
Therefore, I think paper is the best material to use. It’s cheap, everyone can get it close by and it’s easy to work with it.
In puncto design, it should be modern and somehow crypto related. I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but whenever I see this kind of pattern, I think about blockchain connections and connected nodes:

By coincidence, this design is really easy to apply to a mask when making it out of paper.
With the help of Google, I rapidly found out that a similar thing to my idea exists already, it’s called: Low Poly Mask.

They’re really easy to make and there are hundreds of different designs on the web. I found this site that has a pretty exotic collection: https://wintercroft.com/collections/masks

When all the members of the DeepOnion community agree to use one design, DeepOnion can get a face better and faster as if every one would use a different mask. There's so much choice, we only need to decide on a design together.

3D Printing gives the possibility, to make a smaller pattern which looks nicer in my opinion, but again, most don't have access to a 3D Printer and I prefer to have light paper on my face rather than plastic.

Please share your opinion about this idea! What design would you love to see?
Will we have masks like the one below in 3017? That's definitely my favorite design!
