Washington cuts power to illegal miners

in #crypto6 years ago

The Washington State Electrical Service cut electricity to three "unauthorized" sites that officials said posed a risk to public safety.

The district of Chelan County said Monday that the three mining farms - located in Wenatchee, Malaga and Chelan - "used too much electricity, which involved the risk of fire. It could also damage the entire electrical infrastructure in the cities because they are not calibrated for such power. For this reason, utility managers have disconnected these sites from their distribution network.

We are not only worried, but we are outraged that people are putting people at risk, "said Commissioner Steve McKenna in a statement released on April 2. We will not tolerate it. I want it to be very clear.
The commissioner added that in the future, fraudsters who set up without authorization could face legal action "theft of electricity and endangering public safety". However, PUD Commissioner Garry Arseneault said any restrictions of this nature will be limited to unapproved and non-approved miners, who are approved and who abide by the rules.

Chelan County - a region known for its abundant hydropower - is an attractive location for large industrial miners, who exploit the region's relatively cheap electricity to maximize their profits.

Other local governments in the region would make similar moves. Wenatchee, for example, recently passed new ordinances on cryptocurrency mining. The city has joined Chelan City, Leavenworth and East Wenatchee to restrict the development of mining farms.
