What is patient data?
When a doctor sees a patient, they collect lots of information about them. They’ll ask about family history and symptoms, they might want to know if the patient smokes or what work they do, eventually they’ll record a diagnosis. They will record what medicines and treatments the patient has had, and the results of blood or other tests.
All of this patient data can be shared with other parts of the NHS to make sure the patient receives the treatment which they need.
Patient data is very useful for purposes beyond treatment of individuals. Data from many patients is combined to plan our health care system, making sure we have the right facilities where they are most needed.
It’s used to monitor safety, making sure drugs aren’t causing unexpected side effects, and to improve quality, by analysing how the health service is being run. Patient data is also vital for research.
Why is patient data so useful for research?
Researchers use large sets of patient data to look for patterns which help them understand how diseases are caused and how they can be prevented and treated.
They may also use data to help recruit appropriate participants into clinical trials. Using combined patient data has helped to make enormously important discoveries in fighting heart disease and many other illnesses.
It is important to note that researchers will (with very few exceptions and only then with special permission) only have access to data that has been anonymised (i.e. the patients’ identities are removed and not disclosed) and where patients have individually consented for their data to be used for research.
Access to patient data has helped scientists:
• establish the link between smoking and diseases such as lung cancer and heart disease
• confirm the health risks of asbestos
• show that high blood pressure increases heart disease risk
• work out how the AIDS virus is transmitted
• prove babies put to sleep on their back are at lower risk of cot death
• demonstrate the benefits of lowering cholesterol using statins, now a standard treatment for patients at high risk of heart disease.
We need a system of data access which protects patient privacy while also enabling cutting edge research to save and improve lives.
