How to build a Crypto Currency Mining Rig
Most miners over the past years have relied on AMD graphics cards as their computing source of ultimate power for crypto mining.
Little did they know that since the release of the newer GTX 10 series gpus, better hash power can be had! mining software has now caught up with methods to use the cuda architecture to successfully mine Ethereum and a handful of other currencies.
The single most important key to mining successfully is the rig's hash power.
This means stringing multiple graphics processors together in order to create a real powerhouse machine because lets face it, you're competing to find new blocks whether you're part of a pool of people working together, or going solo.
The secret weapon of the 10 series gpus is the GTX 1070.
Some would think that the 1080 or 1080i would be better, but you must take into account the type of memory they have GDDR5X compared to the much more efficient at mining GDDR5. The X version is great for video graphics, but horrible for mining algorithms.
How to Build....
You pretty much need a full desktop computer in parts to create a mining rig. that means selecting a motherboard with as many PCI-E 1x slots as possible to fit as many gpus in it as you can. an example of a great mobo for mining is the MSI Z170A with 7 1x slots available.
there will soon be a crypto mining mobo capable of 13 simultaneous pci-e 1x slots called the ASROCK H110 pro BTC
another essential addition to traditional computer parts is a set of USB Risers that are PCI-E 16x to 1x adapters. You will need 1 for each Graphics card you employ.
Otherwise, the regular requirements for a pc including CPU, RAM, HDD, case, cabling etc apply.
You will need a MASSIVE power supply to run all those graphics cards.
a good suggestion is the Rosewill Hercules 1600 which has 8 dedicated PCI-e power cables
In order to mine successfully, you will need to join a mining pool nowadays.
my suggestion and the one i use is coinotron.com
once you create an account on there, you will need to go into account/workers and create a default worker.
this will be where you point your mining software to connect to so you get tracked and paid for the mining.
follow the instructions on the pool's help page to download the mining application.
a little help with making the miner work....
- the miner will need a start.bat file to make it work.
each miner will have a specific way of writing the file using notepad. the pool gives you the coding to make the file with and you just edit the username and password/ workername to match your account.
otherwise, once you have your graphics cards running and the mining software ready, you just open it and it does its thing!
I make mining rigs on the side for people so if you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot a comment and i will help you anytime!
cheers,
Chris
the GTX 1070 OC I have tested in my own rigs get anywhere from 26-32 MH while mining ethereum fyi where as the RX 580 AMD cards are still under 30 even with modded BIOS
Just curious, how much would you charge to help someone set up a mining rig?
Free but you have to do all the work! I can suggest which components to buy and instructions on how to assemble but unless youre in ontario canada i couldnt physically help
Graphics cards of high end nature are hard to come by right now and you need 6 or seven. Typical cost for a full rig is about 3000$USD min
I guess my first question would be, " is it worth it?" How long would it take to recoup the $3k investment, given to today's exchange rates? Not to mention the huge power draw of these rigs. I'm just curious.
Great post. I was looking for info's about mining and I read new things. Thanks.
If you need any specific info or need any kind of help getting going, shoot me a msg and ill gladly help! Have 2 mini rigs going now
