How a natural phenomenon can explain cryptography
I think I don’t have to give an introduction when it comes to Bitcoin. It has been becoming increasingly popular these days. However, many of us are unaware of how it works and what mathematical equations are being used for transactions and security. Sometimes a very complex subject can be understood in a very simple yet precise way. To understand this, a Stanford physicist named William Gilpin during his holidays worked on fluid dynamics.

Cryptocurrencies, being a virtual currency, it is not controlled by any government, rather they are being secured by a mathematical function known as a cryptographic hash, which gives a unique output that hides the input. These operations are useful as they make hard for hackers to track cryptocurrencies. William Gilpin saw a connection between the way this system works and fluid dynamics, for instance, stirring a coffee. He works on a principle called chaotic mixing.

Imagine stirring coffee creamer into a mug of black coffee and watching the creamer separate into a swirling pattern. If the creamer were stirred precisely the same way in the future, the same pattern would result. But even the smallest change in the location of the spoon or the speed of the stir results in a very different pattern. just looking at the resulting pattern of the creamer in the coffee doesn't reveal anything about the original action -- where the spoon was, how fast it moved, or how many circles -- similar to the way a hash function transforms information so that the input is impossible to identify.

He explained brilliantly how natural things could easily explain a complex hash function. He got a result which almost satisfies all the properties of the hash function. He made a connection between computer science and applied physics and expecting this connection would allow even more secure ways of protecting and controlling digital information.

really a good way to look at it, thanks for this really great article and explanation in a simple way of explaining cryptography

A complex issue in the world of cryptocurrencies but we must make an effort to understand it because it is the reality of the future. Thanks for the explanation!

True @marynet we just have to understand it one way or the other, quiet difficult to assimilate at times, the coffee stirring analogy is a lovely way of explaining. Thanks for sharing this @africaunited

no sabia esto de la criptomonedas no sabia que podían estar protegidas matemática conocida como hash es increíble saber esto muy interesante

@africaunited, thanks for sharing this explanatory writeup, breaking down such a complex concept in a simple way.

I wish i understood what the illustration is all about.

This reminds me to the Chaos Theory; an insignificant change in a process, generates unpredictable results in the output.

Cheers!

It could be interesting to apply this to a model o the macro crypto market performance.
