This type of attack is not unique to crypto. DNS hijacking has happened to banks as well. Even local versions of Google, Paypal and Microsoft have been hijacked before.
And this is one of the major things holding crypto back, how would you feel to wake up every day and have to check your account hoping it hasn’t been hacked and it’s just a sitting duck. There really needs to be a lot more security with these things that is simple to use before it will really take off.
Thank you so much @crypt0 for covering the MEW hack. Is it possible for the downloaded offline version to be compromised as well during these DNS exploits? Would the downloaded version of MyCrypto behave any different when sending funds?
Popular crypto wallet MEW hit by DNS attack that drained some users’ accounts.The hacker has phished around 215 ETH in the past two and a half hours from various wallets and transferred all the money to another account. The account has been closed as Google has resolved the DNS to the current IPS.
Although Hardware wallets are the best solutions to feel safe for holding and transacting your cryptocurrencies, many participants continue to ignore these threats. They should be realistic and take care of their security first before considering entering into these assets. I think this also demonstrates why many investors remain on the sidelines as they are used to centralized organizations taking those security measures for them unfortunately.
