LATEST SOUTH AFRICAN CRIME FIGURES

in #crime6 years ago

Yesterday we had some crime stats released and applauding they have gone down. A decrease is good but the figures are so bad it doesn't mean very much. Do these figures make me feel any safer? they are meaningless as all it tells me is policing is sub standard and non existent.

If a country has a strong and straight police force then these figures wouldn't be as bad as what we have. Straight means they are well trained and not corrupt and basically not adding to the problem. A large percentage of crimes seem to involve some inside information somewhere.

A friend of mine does community policing in his area to help reduce crime and protect his neighborhood. It is unlike your neighborhood watch that you may have experienced in your area. They work in pairs with back up and wear flak jackets and are armed. they have two way radios and walkie talkies to communicate with each other. Everyone who is part of the group is on duty 24 hours as it is their area they are protecting.

Last week a car was hijacked in their neighborhood and via tracker which is fitted to all vehicles (compulsory for insurance now) they went looking for it. When they found it a few Kilometers away it was getting a police escort and they went into a high speed chase and recovered the vehicle. The police car that was with the stolen vehicle disappeared and sped off in another direction.

Firstly what was the police car up to and secondly why didn't it stop the stolen vehicle. It is not fishy but blatantly obvious that they were helping the stolen vehicle get away and weren't expecting a neighborhood watch that is more organised than the police come after them.

This is what the local communities are having to do now to protect their property and their lives. Crime is rampant and only when an area gets a good name for a high risk area to criminals will it drop. The criminals will move off to an easier target in another area.

Here are the stats that were released yesterday and it is a chilling reminder how bad things really are.

Most of these cars that are stolen or hijacked end up across the border in neighboring countries. Some are then cloned and re sold back into the country at a later date. The 4x4 of road vehicles are sought after with the Range Rover's and Land Cruisers at the top of the list. I drive a car that no one wants for a reason and it is not by choice either, but it feels a lot safer.

Just this year alone one in 10 households will have been affected by some type of crime. This is no way to live and the people need to take back the power of policing by doing it themselves. Some readers may be shocked at what we have to do but this is an every day reality as life has no real value here at all.

Your crime example is a really excellent illustration what it means when the state is near-defunct. The police doesn't take petty theft very seriously here, either, but it would be difficult to get away with car theft, not to mention a homicide. Speaking of homicides, how likely is the police to catch a killer?

very unlikely unless we caught him in the act or shot him for them. Everyone who is a citizen here has their fingerprints taken for their identity documents. that doesn't really help as I know people who have taken names of other people to become nationalized. This happened post 1994 when the government wanted extra people for polling numbers. Basically how accurate their systems are is a guess so no guarantees whether fingerprints will match the correct person anyway.

The wife’s parents are heading to capetown Wednesday and think they hired a 4 x 4! 😱😱😱

Lol. Should be ok as long as they don't have anything in view like phones. The road from the airport is pretty bad sometimes and is a known hot spot for crime. Smash and grabs are common in Cape Town and will literally grab the phone out of your hands while you are in the car.

howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! so you just drive an old beater car that looks bad but runs good? that's really smart.

I t's a dodge but nothing great. There are plenty of other cars I would prefer to drive but this is the smartest way of staying out of trouble I think.

howdy back sir cryptoandcoffee..yes sir I agree. I would drive something that looked like an old beater with some rust on it! lol.
bytheway, do they mostly have American cars down there?
