What's a makerspace?
In a nutshell, they're hubs for creativity and entrepreneurship.
Makerspaces give people access to tools and machines that would allow them to create, yet can't afford themselves. They are also fountains of inspiration and collaboration, giving creatives a place to come together with like minded individuals to bounce ideas between, or build partnerships. They are also cultural hotspots that attract a wide variety of people with different ideals and talents.
Makerspaces can be the launch pad of new businesses and inventions by allowing people to create prototypes they otherwise couldn't without hiring a team of people to facilitate the manufacturing. They allow musicians, artists, digital creators, and more, the chance to truly express themselves in their own way.
There are many types of makerspaces!
Some specialize in creating and experimenting with electronics and software, while others are local arts and crafts workshops. There are makerspaces set up inside schools and public libraries, ones that work on a donation basis, and others that are set up for profit.
Many host events like art expositions, contests, and community fundraisers, while some are purpose-built to help create new businesses and brands.
What would one find in a makerspace?
All makerspaces are different, but some of the common things one would find in any of them are things like:
- open space and workstations for collaboration or quiet tinkering
- 3D printers
- CNC machines
- arts and crafts supplies
- versatile storage solutions
- lots of computers
- tools (both mechanical and electronic)
- woodworking tools
- sewing machines
- passionate people
This list could on and on and on. A makerspace can contain anything and everything its members desire!
