Brainstorming - A Creating Thinking Technique

Creativity comes from a blend of individual and collective ‘ideation’. Brainstorming is a creativity technique to generate a large number of ideas for the solution of a problem which works well in groups. Brainstorming is the often-maligned practice of getting a group of people together and generating ideas. Group Brainstorming helps in following ways :

• Encourages you to look at things in new ways
• Diverse experience of a team instead of individual
• The whole team is involved so everyone ‘buys into’ the outcome
• Should be relaxed and informal to encourage participation

Rules

• Everyone having a say
• All ideas being equally valued
• No criticism of other people's ideas is allowed

• Focus on clear goals
• No critical remarks allowed
• Start solo
• Quantity is desired
• Wild ideas are helpful and encouraged
• Adding to ideas is okay
• Facilitator keeps groups on task and creative. Ask ‘What else?’
• Record everything
