Flash Photography - Creative Shutter Drag

in #creativity7 years ago (edited)

When you use a flash, you're effectively creating a double exposure; the ambient exposure which tends to take much longer than the pop of your flash. Usually "ghosting" is an unwelcome artifact, but you can use slower shutter speeds creatively too.

This technique takes practice and experimentation but it's worth the effort. It's great for adding excitement to party photos, or drama and movement to posed studio shots. Here are some examples of shots where I purposefully "dragged the shutter."

Tips for shutter drag:

  • Make sure you know where your flash is syncing - rear shutter or front of shutter
  • Try TTL to nail flash exposure, then experiment with different shutter speeds
  • Experiment with movement, spinning, twisting, during the exposure.
  • Or have your subjects move!

Valuable lesson, @condra. In analogue, bad experiments were wasted film and money, so people tend to afraid of experimentation. With digital photography people can experiment as they wish. Just do it! (and no Nike, please 😊)

Very nice technique, never managed to get it that crisp!
