Just a Moment

It has been such a long time since she had been in this place, she walked into the house acknowledging the musky scent of smoke and lies that has since settled in-between layers of dust that draped the antique furniture. She stood there for a moment breathing in the memories that chained her to this day, then looked up at the elaborate bookshelves that's former glory is now only demarcated by the array of hard covered books encased in a soft cover of cobwebs.

Paint and wallpaper alike moved away from the walls like autumn leaves getting ready to dance their way to the ground - she breathed out, then took the first step in, then another until she finally reached a wall mounted mirror, every step so far had brought her one step closer to a reflection of the person she thought she might end up being, but it was not that person looking back at her in this moment, in this mirror.

She slowly reached for a chair and sat herself down at the table, swiping her hand over the layer of dust that entrapped it, then she gazed down as if she was expecting it to answer the multitude of questions that were devouring her mind like a pack of hungry scavengers tearing at what little flesh was left on a carcass.

Had she come such a long way too feel so small, so helpless? She reached for the holstered gun on her side and liberated it from its confines then placed it out on the table in front of her, then gave a small sigh of relief as if lifting the weight from her side lifted a weight off her shoulders. This used to be a place of sanctuary she thought to herself, but now it is just a place close to ruin, just a place.

She reflected a little while longer on how she allowed herself to feel, then she pushed herself up from the table took a deep breath as she made peace with the fact that this is just a place, and this is just a moment.
