Player memories - Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
In Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth we play the role of detective Jack Walters. The game starts with a police raid on an old abandoned house controlled by cultists. As a result of macabre events during the action, our hero is taken to the Arkham Asylum mental hospital. This is how the prologue to the game looks like, the proper game starts after leaving the hospital and accepting another investigation, from a mysterious person.
We go to a gloomy fishing town called Innsmouth. The name Innsmouth for fans of Howard Phillips Lovecraft is a cult name. The vision of a town ruled by psychopathic followers of Dagon (Shadow over Innsmouth), is one of the best stories of horror and the atmosphere of this reading is very well reflected in the game. We meet on our way known characters from the above mentioned story, among others: Zadok Allen drunkard, Marsh family, or the one of a kind church with its bloody rituals - Esoteric Desire of the Dagon.
The game itself is hellishly difficult: from the fight with a large enemy, where at the beginning through about 30% of the game we do not have anything to really fight and we have to run away and hide , and if we find this weapon we always have too little bullets; through puzzles to which, if we overlook during the adventure tips are unresolved, such as: safes, which are in the whole game four and without opening them we will not move on. The game can be classified as an adventure - horror - fps .

Innovations. At that time (premiere 2005) the game had some good ideas. In terms of injuries, if we jumped from high up or got shot in the leg Jack had a problem with moving, the head wound narrowed the field of vision. Our hero, if he didn't heal his injuries in time, died as a result of bleeding out. The wound dressing with the first aid kit is a mini-game, because we have available 4 means from the bandage to the disinfectant and morphine.
Also remember that our character is afraid: when unexplained, paranormal things happen or someone is chasing us, or we stand too high and look down.
Jack will have a coordination problem and the image will be blurred making it difficult for us to move around.
Graphically, the game does not belong to the most beautiful, used very dark and grainy filters to reflect the strange atmosphere of our adventure - one may interfere with it, personally I like this convention.
The game has of course errors, sometimes we jam in one place, the scripts do not read on time . After years it can be repaired with the help of path both official and unofficial path improving all mechanics.
What I like about this production is the fact that this is not another shooting where we kill hundreds of enemies, the game teaches humility, is difficult even at the lowest level of difficulty and most importantly, perfectly transfers to the screen the content of Shadow over Innsmouth.
